“Come Out From Among Them and Be Separate”

My Testimony of Denouncing Sigma Gamma Rho, Sorority, Inc.

“I still serve God through my sorority.”

“But my Pastor or church leader is in the same fraternity/sorority.”

“I had a relationship with God before I joined a sorority, and I still do today as a member. My relationship with God was not negatively impacted at all. It’s always God first!”

I’ve said all of these things throughout my time in a sorority, yet I was still in darkness about the absolute truth.

And today, that’s what I want to speak on. The absolute truth about Black Greek Letter Organizations (BGLOs) – specifically those that are part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) also referred to as the Divine Nine.

Although what I will share is specific to an NPHC sorority, this can be applied broadly to all secret societies.

Here is my testimony.

The Timeline

On June 24, 2021, all of my ties to Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. were officially broken.

Spring 2016

  • I joined Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. during my last semester of undergrad. Truth be told, I even prayed about joining the sorority. But let the whole truth be told, I prayed about my decision with a made-up mind.

Fall 2016

  • I joined a graduate chapter of the sorority and remained a member until 2018.

Summer/Fall 2019

  • My membership became inactive, but I was trying to find a new graduate chapter to join after relocating to another state out West.

Fall 2020

  • I never joined another graduate chapter. Instead, I renounced and denounced my membership.

Summer 2021

  • I received a letter from the sorority acknowledging my renunciation and stating that my name has been removed from its official membership roll. On June 24, 2021, all of my ties to Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. were officially broken.

What Got My Attention?

After the hype of joining, leading service projects, and attending the grand sorority events and gatherings, I opened the sorority’s Handbook (also known as a ritual book). I decided to take a deeper look at what I was agreeing to by being a member.

After all, I only received this Handbook after I joined the sorority. There was no way I knew everything that I was getting into beforehand.

That’s when I came across the Omega Rho Ceremony.

Omega Rho Ceremony – The Chapter of Departed Sorors

This ceremony is done when a member of Sigma Gamma Rho dies. Candles are lit, Scriptures and poems are recited, and members who have passed on are committed to Omega Rho, the chapter of departed sorors. A prayer to the Heavenly Father is done at the end and sealed in the name of Jesus Christ. But the ceremony ends with the sorority hymn. The same people who read Scriptures and prayed to Yah would then go on to sing praises to the sorority’s Greek deity.

Oh Mighty Yah, show mercy on us, shed light on our ignorance, and deliver us from our sin.

“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.” John 16:13

Reading through the Omega Rho ceremony was enough for me to decide that I must renounce. This is when the scales started to fall from my eyes, and my heart began to soften a little bit more.

The Omega Rho Chapter does not exist where the Most High God lives. Omega Rho does not promise eternal life. Either what I was reading was real, or it wasn’t. And I was not okay with waiting until my last breath to find out.

“For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins…” Hebrews 10:26

Taking a Deeper Look

Now with my eyes opened, I looked deeper at the sorority hymn and pledge.

Then I really got sick to my stomach.

I began to read between the lines and understand the true meaning of the routine things I recited at every chapter meeting.

The sorority hymn concludes meetings and is a song of praise sung in chorus to Sigma Gamma Rho, glorifying the organization.

“But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.” John 4:23

The sorority pledge opens the meetings and includes statements affirming one’s dedication to the organization. It is an oath that’s recited to devote the best of my abilities to support the sorority.

“For you shall worship no other god, for YHWH, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous Elohim.” Exodus 34:14

Recalling Details from My Initiation

After reading the sorority hymn and pledge with new eyes after four years of being in the sorority, I began to think about how I was initiated into the organization.

The main details I remember are:

  • Wearing all black and being led into a dark room,
  • Kneeling on the sorority pillow I was instructed to create,
  • Reciting an oath to another deity while placing my hands on a Bible, and
  • Getting a new name that had Greek letters in it.

In my initiation, I broke the 1st commandment by reciting an oath to another deity (“To thee only, Sigma Gamma Rho…”), created an altar to another god by kneeling on a sorority pillow, and reveled in being named after another deity, as the line name I had included the sigma letter.

Although ignorant, my actions and words showed that I agreed with mocking Yah and was fine with disobedience.

“But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.” Matthew 12:36

For Those Considering Joining a Sorority

If you are a believer in YHWH and the Messiah, Yeshua, and have been considering joining a sorority, I urge you to:

  • Consider the facts beyond the organization’s history and the hype and attention they receive from our community. Look past the emotional pull of it.
  • Examine the reason you want to join. Are you joining to fill a void in something you feel you currently lack? Get to the root of your reason why. Figure out why you believe joining one of these organizations is the best way to fulfill that desire.
  • Do your own research, diligently pray and seek Yah, and decide on who you will serve.

You do not know all of the rituals, oaths, or hymns before joining. You can learn more by talking to women who were part of a sorority and have denounced it, who can share their experience. You can also do research on your own. I mention some resources at the end of this post that are great starting points.

For Those Currently in a Sorority

If you are a believer in YHWH and the Messiah, Yeshua, and are in a sorority and willing to dive deeper, I urge you to:

  • Let down your defenses and be open to what you are seeing, hearing, and feeling.
  • Take a fresh look at your ritual handbooks. Are you okay with those procedures you have to follow? Are you alright with the rituals that go on in the organization?
  • Re-examine your intake process. During your probate, you were renamed. Most of the new names you receive reflect the name of the organization in some way. How does that make you feel? What about how Yah has named you and fashioned you? Do you think that this is a mockery of Yah?
  • Do your own research, diligently pray and seek Yah, and decide on who you will serve.

You shall love YHWH your Elohim with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.” Deuteronomy 6:5

“And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.” Ephesians 5:11

I encourage people to watch the videos in the YouTube series below called “Exposing the Divine Nine“, as a starting point to research. There is a lot here. You will see that it doesn’t start or stop at BGLOs. Also visit Out From Among Them Ministries. I’ve found their FAQs section helpful in peeling back the layers of secret societies.

“Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil;
Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness;
Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”
Isaiah 5:20

We have to see the truth for what it is and read in between the li(n)es. I am not “throwing the baby out with the bath water”, I am taking the baby out first. We always have a choice.

I am not writing this to push my convictions on anyone. Instead, I want people who read this to think sincerely and thoroughly about this topic. Please understand that this is a matter of salvation. Yah will not have any other gods before him. Keeping ourselves from idols is a test we face every day. Let’s serve Yah and serve him only.

“See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil, in that I command you today to love YHWH your Elohim, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and YHWH your Elohim will bless you in the land which you go to possess.

But if your heart turns away so that you do not hear, and are drawn away, and worship other gods and serve them, I announce to you today that you shall surely perish; you shall not prolong your days in the land which you cross over the Jordan to go in and possess.

I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; that you may love YHWH your Elohim, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days; and that you may dwell in the land which YHWH swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.”
